BIRDS-AFRICA
Read MoreCrested Drongo (Dicrurus forficatus).
There is an ancient Malagasy tale of how the Drongo was named the king of animals: A long time ago a huge fire raged across Madagascar. God called upon anyone to come and fight the fire to save the island. Heroically, bats answered the call and fought and, ultimately, extinguished the fire. However, as the bats were busy fighting the fire, the Drongo saw his opportunity and flew to the forest floor, covered himself with ashes and went and said to God: “Look what I have done! The fire is out! We are saved!” Thankful, God went and named the Drongo the king of the animals. Overlooked for the their efforts, the bats were furious and decided to sleep upside down, in protest from that day on.
